Le drapeau suédois a un fond bleu clair, avec une croix jaune répartie horizontalement sur le drapeau. Son design a peu changé en plus de 500 ans. On pense que le drapeau actuel est basé sur l'un des armoiries du Royaume de Suède au 15ème siècle.
Ce drapeau est en vigueur depuis 1906, peu de temps après la dissolution de l'union entre la Norvège et la Suède et un changement de couleur final a été appliqué au ton bleuâtre de la norme suédoise.

Étant l'un des pays nordiques, la Suède et son drapeau ont été influencés par les alliances et les changements politiques dans la région. Cependant, contrairement à de nombreux autres pays européens, la Suède a conservé sa souveraineté pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale et donc la même bannière nationale.
L'histoire

L'Union de Kalmar était une alliance en Scandinavie qui réunissait les royaumes de Suède, de Norvège et du Danemark sous un même monarque. Cependant, chaque pays de l'union a réussi à conserver un statut relativement souverain, du moins en termes de forme de gouvernement.
L'Union Kalmar a été créée avec l'intention d'arrêter l'expansion allemande au nord et de défendre ainsi sa souveraineté contre la conquête imminente des armées allemandes.
Les politiques internes et externes de chaque pays étaient supervisées et décidées par le monarque de l'union. La société n'avait pas une vie plus longue car les nobles danois et suédois n'étaient pas d'accord avec son existence et le roi voulait unifier les trois pays de manière plus formelle, ce que les habitants de chaque nation n'aimaient pas.
Les trois pays scandinaves qui appartenaient à l'Union de Kalmar étaient basés sur le drapeau de l'alliance et ont ensuite créé chacun de leurs propres drapeaux. Le drapeau officiel se composait d'un fond jaune avec une croix rouge, distribuée comme la croix l'est aujourd'hui sur les drapeaux de la Suède, du Danemark, de la Norvège et de la Finlande.

Drapeau d'État de la Suède (1523-1650)
En 1521, les rebelles suédois ont commencé une guerre contre les troupes de l'Union, dans ce qu'on a appelé la guerre de libération ou la guerre civile suédoise. Ce conflit a été mené comme une guerre civile. Il a été promulgué par le noble suédois Gustav Vasa, qui est devenu plus tard le premier roi de Suède depuis leur dissolution de l'union.
La guerre visait à retirer Christian II, roi de l'Union Kalmar, du trône. Le conflit a commencé après la croissance du mouvement indépendantiste suédois, qui a commencé à se développer beaucoup plus au début du XVIe siècle parce qu'il n'était pas d'accord avec la politique du roi.
Cependant, le gouverneur suédois de l'Union avait l'intention de maintenir la Suède sous la même bannière Kalmar, mais n'a pas réussi à contenir la rébellion avec les armées à sa disposition. Ainsi, en 1523, Christian II fut destitué du trône et la Suède quitta l'Union de Kalmar.
La Norvège et le Danemark sont restés dans l'union pendant près de trois siècles de plus, et ce n'est qu'au début du XIXe siècle que les Danois et les Norvégiens se sont complètement séparés politiquement. En 1523, Gustav Vasa devint le premier régent de Suède sous le nom de Gustav I.
La Suède a adopté les couleurs traditionnelles des armoiries qu'elle avait sous l'Union, avec une croix jaune et un fond bleu sur un drapeau en forme de bannière de guerre. La croix était de la même longueur, haute et large.

Deuxième drapeau d'État de la Suède (1650-1818)
Vers 1650, une loi fut rédigée par laquelle l'utilisation officielle du drapeau à trois queues était autorisée comme drapeau officiel du pays.
Le drapeau est resté en vigueur jusqu'à ce que la Suède rejoigne la Norvège au début des années 1800, peu de temps après que la Norvège a rompu son union avec le Danemark. Aujourd'hui, ce drapeau n'est utilisé que comme insigne militaire et naval suédois. Il a été remplacé en 1818.

Drapeau de l'union entre la Suède et la Norvège (1818-1844)
À partir de 1815, la Suède et la Norvège ont reformé une Union qui durerait cette fois près d'un siècle. Le premier drapeau de l'Union a été proposé par un homme politique suédois et a servi à représenter les deux pays de l'alliance. Le drapeau norvégien a été placé en haut à gauche de la bannière, c'est la première chose vue lorsqu'elle est hissée sur un mât.
Cela a été fait avec l'intention de souligner l'importance des deux nations en représentant les deux sur le même drapeau. Il convient de noter que le drapeau de la Norvège, à cette époque, était identique au drapeau du Danemark. La Norvège a cessé de faire partie de la précédente Union Kalmar au début du 19e siècle, mais a continué à utiliser le même drapeau danois comme bannière nationale.
Ce nouveau drapeau de l'union entre la Suède et la Norvège est devenu le drapeau officiel de l'alliance, mais chaque pays était autorisé à continuer à utiliser ses drapeaux locaux quand cela lui convenait. Le drapeau de l'Union a été changé quelques années plus tard, lorsque la Norvège a créé un nouveau drapeau pour le différencier du drapeau danois.

Deuxième drapeau de l'union entre la Suède et la Norvège (1844-1905)
En 1844, une résolution royale fut adoptée par laquelle la Norvège et la Suède auraient un drapeau national avec le même principe: chaque pays utiliserait son propre drapeau avec une représentation de la marque de l'Union en haut à gauche. Le nouveau symbole de l'Union était une combinaison, dans une petite boîte, des drapeaux de la Suède et du Danemark.
Chaque pays a ajouté cette petite boîte en haut de ses drapeaux respectifs. Cependant, à la fin du 19ème siècle, il y avait un état de mécontentement croissant en Norvège au sujet de l'alliance entre les deux pays, et de nombreux citoyens et politiciens ont demandé que la marque syndicale soit retirée du drapeau norvégien.
Il y a eu quelques votes au Congrès norvégien pour supprimer la marque, les deux réussissant, mais ayant fait l'objet d'un veto par décret royal. Cependant, en 1898, un vote a été pris pour retirer le symbole de l'union du drapeau et, comme le vote avait déjà été un succès pour la troisième fois, le roi a approuvé la décision.
Le drapeau militaire norvégien a conservé l'emblème de l'union jusqu'à sa dissolution au début du XXe siècle, mais le drapeau norvégien n'en avait plus le symbole. Le Suédois, cependant, l'a maintenu jusqu'à la dissolution du syndicat en 1905.

Drapeau actuel de la Suède (depuis 1905)
Le drapeau actuel de la Suède a été adopté après la séparation de la Norvège de l'Union et la Suède est devenue un pays indépendant après presque un siècle d'alliance.
Une seule modification claire a été apportée au drapeau, en plus de la suppression du symbole d'union en haut à gauche. La couleur bleu foncé qui avait identifié le drapeau national suédois pendant plus d'un siècle a été changée en une teinte plus claire.
Le dessin du drapeau adopté en 1905 n'a pas été modifié depuis lors, il s'agit du drapeau suédois aujourd'hui.

Sens
La conception actuelle du drapeau suédois, bien qu'adoptée en 1905, remonte beaucoup plus tôt. On ne sait pas exactement ce que représentent les couleurs du drapeau, mais le dessin est étroitement lié à celui du Danemark.
Lorsque la Suède appartenait à l'Union de Kalmar et était sous la bannière danoise, le pays n'avait pas son propre drapeau. Par conséquent, la conception actuelle du drapeau suédois est basée sur celle du drapeau danois.
Le drapeau national du Danemark a été adopté, selon les légendes danoises, après que les troupes danoises ont envahi l'Estonie pour détruire les peuples païens du pays.
Cependant, il était très difficile pour les armées danoises d'envahir la région, alors Dieu a décidé d '«inspirer» les troupes chrétiennes danoises en envoyant un drapeau avec une croix du ciel. Suite à l'invasion de l'Estonie, l'Union de Kalmar a adopté ce drapeau comme drapeau officiel, qui servira plus tard à inspirer la conception de la norme suédoise, norvégienne et danoise.
