Parmi les fonctions de la famille figurent la protection, la subsistance et l'impulsion pour le développement des individus. C'est la première institution sociale composée de personnes liées par le sang ou des liens affectifs.
Au sein de la famille, l'individu se développe dès ses premières étapes et acquiert les outils pour découvrir et exploiter ses talents et ses capacités.
La famille est le premier exemple de transmission des idéologies et des héritages culturels dans une société. En fait, c'est aussi le premier exemple de socialisation qu'une personne rencontre.
Le modèle familial traditionnel comprend un couple hétérosexuel avec un ou plusieurs enfants. Cependant, ce modèle a changé et il existe aujourd'hui différentes constitutions: parents isolés, seconds mariages, cohabitation multiple, homosexuels, entre autres.
Aux origines de l'histoire humaine, ce modèle familial traditionnel n'était pas possible en raison des caractéristiques de la population à cette époque.
Il existait un modèle primitif de coexistence dans lequel la polygamie (un homme avec plusieurs femmes) et la polyandrie (une femme avec plusieurs hommes) étaient naturelles.
Au fil des années, l'union entre personnes ayant des liens consanguins a été interdite, non seulement pour des raisons culturelles, mais aussi pour prévenir l'apparition et la propagation de maladies et de syndromes.

Des éléments tels que l'émergence de différents types de familles, l'intégration des femmes dans le travail et les progrès technologiques ont entraîné des changements dans la structure familiale.
Ces changements transforment également les rôles de chaque membre de la famille et les fonctions que chacun doit remplir en son sein.
Cependant, chaque famille en tant qu'unité sociale remplit les fonctions suivantes:
1- Fonction d'identification
Au sein de la famille, un individu découvre et établit sa propre identité en tant que personne et en tant que sexué.

2- Fonction éducative
Cette fonction est liée à la précédente et fait référence au rôle formateur du noyau familial. C'est dans la famille que l'individu apprend à parler, à marcher et à se comporter, entre autres.

3- Fonction de communication
La fonction éducative est liée à une fonction communicative, car elle enseigne à l'individu les signes, symboles et codes nécessaires pour se faire comprendre dans la société dans laquelle il vit.
Cette fonction de communication est importante car elle affecte la manière dont l'individu se rapportera à ses pairs.
4- Fonction de socialisation
Comme dans le cas de l'éducation, il s'agit d'une fonction partagée entre la famille et les établissements d'enseignement. Il est lié au développement de la capacité d'interagir avec les autres.
La socialisation implique d'être lié intellectuellement, émotionnellement et même économiquement avec d'autres personnes, et pour cela, certaines directives comportementales doivent être respectées. Autrement dit, les gens s'adaptent aux exigences sociales de l'environnement dans lequel ils grandissent.
C'est une fonction qui affecte directement la survie d'un système ou d'un ordre social, puisqu'elle se transmet de génération en génération.
5- Fonction de coopération et de soins
Une famille est également la première instance de sécurité et de protection pour une personne. Le cycle de vie humain lui-même exige qu'il y ait d'autres individus de la même espèce s'occupant des plus petits et des plus sans défense.
Le noyau familial est chargé de fournir un abri et de la nourriture à ses membres, en particulier les plus jeunes.
En fait, on pense que l'être humain fait partie des espèces nées les plus vulnérables aux maladies ou à l'attaque d'un prédateur. Pour cette raison, la protection de la famille devient un besoin vital.
De même, chaque membre de la famille est censé contribuer aux soins et à la croissance des autres. Cette contribution peut être économique, affective, éducative, entre autres.
Le soutien familial naît du sentiment d'appartenance de ses membres. Sachant qu'ils partagent des croyances, des projets et des affections, ils s'impliquent et se sentent responsables les uns des autres.

Bien qu'elle n'apparaisse pas en premier sur cette liste, c'est l'une des fonctions de base de la famille car les gens ont besoin de nourriture pour leur corps et, presque dans la même mesure, d'affection et d'affection.
L'être humain se nourrit de cette affection qu'il reçoit dans la famille, il apprend à la ressentir pour les autres et à l'exprimer.
La manière dont les émotions sont exprimées dans la famille affecte la manière dont les gens géreront leurs émotions dans d'autres environnements: travail, école, communauté, entre autres.
7- Fonction économique
Vivre en famille implique que ses membres doivent contribuer aux forces productives de leur société. Cela implique également qu'ils doivent consommer des biens et des services. De cette manière, la machine économique des nations reste active.
De plus, c'est dans la famille que la personne apprend des notions économiques telles que la budgétisation, l'épargne, les comptes fournisseurs, les investissements, les dépenses et d'autres concepts.
8- Fonction reproductrice
Une autre des fonctions de base d'une famille est de préserver l'espèce grâce à la reproduction de ses membres.
Mais en plus de la reproduction biologique, il y a aussi la reproduction culturelle à travers le travail de socialisation de la famille.
9- Fonction normative
Dans la famille, l'individu acquiert son premier cadre de référence sur les règles et règlements qu'il doit respecter.
Chaque famille établit ses propres règles et normes de comportement pour maintenir l'harmonie entre les membres de sa maisonnée.
Ces normes facilitent également les relations entre les membres d'une société, puisqu'elles délimitent clairement les rôles individuels et la manière dont l'autorité est perçue.
10- Fonction émancipatrice
La famille est celle qui offre le sentiment d'indépendance et d'autonomie nécessaire au bon développement de la vie des gens. Dans la famille, l'individu comprend les limites entre dépendance et indépendance.
Dans ce noyau se trouvent les outils qui favorisent la croissance et la maturation de l'individu, ce qui le rendra apte à vivre seul dans la société.
