Certaines des caractéristiques des dictons principaux sont leur langage simple et facile à mémoriser, leur utilisation familière, leur origine anonyme, entre autres. Le dicton est une phrase populaire qui exprime un enseignement, une réflexion, une expérience ou une pensée, comme un jugement et sous la forme d'une phrase.
L'étude des dictons, proverbes et autres déclarations est connue sous le nom de parémiologie. Les dictons sont des créations anonymes qui se sont transmises de génération en génération, d'abord oralement puis par écrit.
Faisant partie du savoir populaire, ils ont évolué et ont diminué à mesure qu'ils perdent leur validité, car ils sont liés à la culture et à la manière générale de penser de chaque époque. Les propos dénigrants à l'égard des femmes, ainsi que d'autres qui reflètent la violence, sont tombés en désuétude.

- "Le chien qui aboie ne mord pas".
2- Langage simple
Ils sont composés d'un langage très simple, avec une rime qui facilite leur apprentissage et leur diffusion, avec des mots qui racontent des choses de la vie quotidienne qui facilitent leur compréhension.
- "Pain pain, et vin est venu."
- «Quand la rivière sonne, elle apporte des pierres».
3- Ils parlent de la vraie vie
Ils reflètent une phrase, qui peut bien être le produit de l'expérience, ou un enseignement ou une norme de comportement.
- "Un tien vaut mieux que deux tu l'auras".
- "Faire du bien sans regarder qui".
4- Ils sont d'usage courant
Elles renvoient à des situations actuelles même lorsqu'elles ont été conçues dans des temps très anciens, en utilisant des comparaisons avec des observations de la nature, des offices ou des sujets spirituels.
6- origine anonyme
Ils ne sont réalisés par aucun auteur reconnu mais font partie du patrimoine culturel. La plupart d'entre eux ont été compilés dans l'œuvre de Cervantès: Don Quichotte.
7- Ils sont transmis de génération en génération
Outre les études et les compilations qui en ont été faites, elles sont apprises à la maison ou à l'école dans un discours familier.
8- Facile à mémoriser
Dans sa structure, on utilise la rime, l'analogie ou la comparaison et les jeux de mots. De cette façon, leur mémorisation est renforcée.
- "Un dieu suppliant et avec le marteau donnant".
- "En l'absence de pain, les gâteaux sont bons."
9- Ils produisent un sentiment de vérité ou de mensonge
Cependant, le dicton n'exprime vraiment qu'une expérience ou une réalité. Le dicton donne à la personne qui le récite le sentiment d'être le détenteur de la vérité et de la connaissance qu'elle veut enseigner ou avertir des conséquences possibles si les actions qui sont recommandées ne sont pas prises.

Par exemple, le dicton "tout ce qui brille n'est pas d'or" signifie que tout ce qui attire votre attention n'a pas une valeur réelle. Cependant, cette signification pourrait être étendue et de nombreux faits et détails peuvent être discutés pour l'expliquer.

Dictons dans différentes langues et sociétés
Les dictons sont similaires dans différentes langues et cultures. On pense que cela est dû à certains facteurs tels que la diffusion de la Bible et d'autres classiques dans le monde.
Le fait que la société humaine interprète une situation de manière similaire dans différents endroits est dû au fait que l'esprit humain traite une situation donnée de manière similaire, et aussi à cause du contact entre différentes sociétés au fil du temps.
Dans la langue espagnole, presque tous les dictons existants avaient déjà été compilés au XVIe siècle, et très peu avaient été créés après cette époque. Les pays d'Amérique latine ont hérité du proverbe populaire d'Espagne, tandis que le proverbe espagnol partage des similitudes avec celui de l'Afrique du Nord. Les différences entre chacun dépendent des races, de la géographie, de la faune et des aliments de chaque région.
Bien que les dictons touchent à des thèmes communs tels que l'amour, l'amitié, le travail, la bonne ou la mauvaise administration, chaque société adapte le dicton typique correspondant à ses coutumes.
C'est ainsi que des dictons tels que "prends le taureau pour les cornes" ou "fais bouvillons" (qui bien que n'étant pas un dicton en tant que tel, ont une origine commune) proviennent de la culture espagnole de la corrida et des tâches qui y sont liées. Faire l'école buissonnière était l'activité que les jeunes pratiquaient pour acquérir des compétences de torero, échappant à leurs devoirs à l'école.
Quant aux différents dictons de chaque langue, il est courant de trouver des équivalences. Cela signifie que même si une traduction littérale n'est pas utilisée, il existe dans les deux langues des phrases qui font référence aux mêmes situations, par exemple:
"Une pomme par jour garde le docteur loin."
"Mieux vaut prévenir que guérir".
