Les faux prophètes sont des individus qui, illégalement, prétendent être propriétaires de vertus qui ne leur sont pas réellement attribuables. Ces faux prophètes utilisent généralement le mot pour persuader leurs victimes, qu'ils convainquent de leur statut d'êtres puissants ou de transmetteurs de messages divins.
Ils sont présents dans la culture associée aux religions, avec une incidence particulière dans le judéo-christianisme. Les premiers faux prophètes ont été dénoncés dans les Saintes Écritures, c'est-à-dire dans la Bible.
Depuis lors, il y a eu de nombreux faux prophètes célèbres qui ont presque toujours répondu à un modèle. Ce modèle est composé d'une série de caractéristiques que nous énumérerons ci-dessous.
Les raisons pour lesquelles les faux prophètes agissent de cette manière peuvent être très variées: gain personnel, gain financier, discrédit d'autres personnes ou croyances et autres fins malveillantes.

Les faux prophètes prétendent souvent ce qu'ils ne sont pas, se faisant voir aux autres comme des personnes spirituelles pleines de sagesse et de connaissance.
Ils l'utilisent pour tromper les plus insouciants. Ils sont impressionnés par leur prétendue proximité avec les divinités, avec lesquelles ils prétendent avoir une relation étroite.
La décontextualisation des textes religieux
Ces phonies essaient toujours d'utiliser des textes religieux de manière à soutenir leurs théories. Pour ce faire, ils décontextualisent des passages ou réinterprètent librement des passages dont le sens réel est différent. Ce sont généralement de bons orateurs et cela facilite leur tâche.
Ils prétendent être mis au défi par Dieu
Ils nomment souvent Dieu comme leur interlocuteur direct, transmetteur sur Terre du message et exécutant la volonté divine.
Avec cette attitude, selon de nombreux religieux, ce qu'ils font, c'est prendre en vain le nom de Dieu, l'une des premières règles religieuses incassables. Ainsi, ils sont placés à un niveau très proche de celui des divinités, au lieu d'être en dessous d'elles, comme il se doit.
Le contrôle et l'intimidation sont ses armes préférées
Les faux prophètes aiment se sentir puissants et projeter ce pouvoir sur leurs disciples. Ils cherchent à être craint, pas respectés.
Pour y parvenir, ils intimident, menacent ou humilient souvent les adeptes qui n'accomplissent pas ce qu'ils prêchent pour argent comptant. Ils utilisent l'embarras du public à des fins dissuasives lorsque quelqu'un ose les contredire.
Ils mettent les `` faits '' avant le mot
Ils sont manipulateurs au point de simuler des événements pour tromper leurs adeptes. Contrairement aux prêtres investis par les autorités religieuses, ils dénigrent souvent les textes sacrés.
Ils le font directement ou indirectement. Autrement dit, soit ils manipulent le sens des Écritures, soit ils essaient de faire en sorte que leurs actes «miraculeux» les remplacent.
Les faux prophètes de la Bible
Dans l'Ancien et le Nouveau Testament, il y a des références directes et indirectes à de faux prophètes. Dans le Nouveau Testament, il y a des exemples dans les évangiles de Matthieu et de Luc.
Dans différents passages, Jésus-Christ anticipe l'arrivée future de faux prédicateurs ou de faux sauveurs. Par conséquent, il exhorte tous les chrétiens à savoir faire la distinction entre le vrai et ceux qui ne le sont pas.
D'autres passages dans lesquels l'existence de faux prophètes se manifeste avant même la naissance de Jésus-Christ se trouvent dans la Lettre aux Corinthiens et les Actes des Apôtres.
