Les groupes ethniques de San Luis Potosí sont les peuples Nahuatl, Huasteco, Pame et Otomí. À l'époque préhistorique, cette région abritait les tribus Huasteca, Chichimec et Guachichil. Beaucoup de ses descendants y vivent encore.
Selon les données recueillies dans le cadre du recensement de la population et des logements, 10% de la population de cette entité parle une langue autochtone.
Ce recensement a été réalisé en 2010 aux États-Unis du Mexique, le nom officiel de la nation mexicaine.
Les quatre principaux groupes ethniques de San Luis de Potosí
1- Groupe ethnique nahuatl
Les Nahuatl sont l'un des groupes ethniques les plus nombreux de San Luis Potosí. Les peuples autochtones qui parlent cette langue sont originaires du nord du Mexique et du sud-ouest des États-Unis.
Au cours des XIIIe et XIVe siècles, ces peuples ont migré vers le sud, par vagues successives, vers les hauts plateaux du centre du Mexique. Cette culture s'est épanouie aux XIVe et XVIe siècles avant 1521, année officielle de la conquête espagnole.
La langue nahuatl appartient à la famille des langues uto-aztèques. Au moment de la conquête, ses locuteurs comprenaient entre autres le Mexica, Acolhuas, Texcocanos, Tlacopac, Chalcas.
Le nahuatl reste la langue indigène la plus parlée au Mexique aujourd'hui. Tous sont connus sous le nom de Nahua et constituent l'un des groupes ethniques les plus représentatifs de San Luis Potosí.
2- Groupe ethnique Huasteca
Les Huastecos parlent une variante de la langue maya. Ils occupent actuellement 55 communes des territoires de San Luis Potosí, Veracruz et Hidalgo.
Les membres de ce groupe ethnique se désignent eux-mêmes comme des «teenek». Cette tribu est issue d'une première expansion maya au nord de la côte de Veracruz.
Entre 750 et 800 après JC, la Huasteca était une culture dominante. Cependant, ils ne se sont pas distingués par la construction de grandes structures, comme cela a été le cas dans d'autres parties de la Méso-Amérique.
3- Groupe ethnique Pame
Les Pame étaient traditionnellement des marchands. Ils ont établi des relations avec d'autres populations autochtones, parlant même d'autres dialectes.
Les Espagnols, après la conquête de cette région au 16ème siècle, ont appelé la zone Pamería, et ont envahi toutes les villes de la région. Les Pame étaient des nomades, connus pour leurs excellents dons de chasseurs et de guerriers.
Aujourd'hui, de nombreux Pame vivent dans la pauvreté, bien que beaucoup pratiquent l'agriculture avec un certain succès.
Un grand nombre d'entre eux ne savent ni lire ni écrire en espagnol et la langue Pame n'a pas de tradition écrite.
4- Groupe ethnique Otomí
Le groupe indigène des Otomi est l'un des plus importants et des plus anciens de la République mexicaine.
Il existe plusieurs groupes linguistiques dans cette famille. Parmi eux se trouvent les Otomí, Mazahua, Matlatzinca, Occupailteco, Pame Sur et Norte et Chichimeco Jonaz.
Les membres de ce groupe ethnique ont été façonnés par leurs relations diverses avec d'autres nations du centre du Mexique et par leur propre dispersion et migration vers d'autres colonies.
Ce peuple, qui s'appelle "hñänñu" (ceux qui parlent Otomí), est associé aux Olmèques et, en plus, aux plus anciens colons du Haut Altiplano. Les Otomí habitaient la vallée de Tula, avant même les Toltèques.
