Le mot électricité a son origine dans le mot grec elektron, qui signifie ambre. Les Espagnols l'ont hérité du latin electrum, et ce dernier vient du grec elektron.
L'ambre est une résine fossile jaune extraite du pin, qui attire les petits objets lorsqu'elle est frottée. Thalès de Milet, un mathématicien grec, fut le premier à observer ces propriétés physiques du matériau.
Le mot electricus a été inventé par William Gilbert, un mathématicien anglais, en l'an 1600 dans son livre intitulé De Magnate, dans lequel il définissait ce mot comme «la propriété qu'un objet a d'attirer les autres lorsqu'il est frotté».
Origine du mot électricité
Bien que ce soit Thales de Milet qui découvrit initialement la propriété de l'ambre d'attirer les objets lorsqu'il est frotté, ce n'est qu'en 1646 que le mot anglais électricité a été utilisé pour la première fois par Sir Thomas Browne dans son Epidemic Pseudodoxy.
Comme l'explique Sir Thomas, il y a des objets qui ont la propriété d'attraction d'objet et d'autres qui n'en ont pas.
En 1733, le chimiste français Charles François de Cisternay du Fay confirma que non seulement l'ambre possédait cette propriété, mais aussi que le verre pouvait attirer les objets lorsqu'il était frotté, puis il appela celle produite par l'électricité résineuse ambrée et celle produite par l'électricité vitreuse ambrée. verre.
Au XVIIIe siècle, après de multiples expériences avec l'électricité, les scientifiques ont donné le nom de charge électrique négative à l'électricité résineuse et de charge électrique positive à l'électricité vitreuse. De même, ils en ont déduit que des charges similaires se repoussent et que des charges différentes s'attirent.
Benjamin Franklin a observé dans ses expériences que tous les matériaux ne possèdent qu'un seul type de fluide électrique qui peut pénétrer librement la matière, mais qu'il ne peut être ni créé ni détruit. L'action du frottement transfère simplement le fluide d'un corps à un autre, électrisant les deux.
Hendrik Antoon Lorentz, un physicien néerlandais, a développé la théorie des électrons en 1895, bien qu'il ne les ait pas inventés de cette manière mais les a appelés "ions".
Le terme électricité à l'heure actuelle
Le terme «électricité» est utilisé depuis plusieurs années de manière non scientifique par les compagnies d'électricité et le grand public, ce qui lui donne une connotation différente de celle de charge électrique.
L'électricité est appelée énergie électromagnétique. La définition a été déplacée encore plus loin et de nombreux auteurs utilisent maintenant le mot «électricité» pour désigner le courant électrique (ampères), le flux d'énergie (watts), le potentiel électrique (volts) ou la force électrique. D'autres se réfèrent à tout phénomène électrique comme type d'électricité.
Ces multiples définitions sont probablement la raison pour laquelle le terme électricité est tombé en désuétude chez les scientifiques. Les manuels de physique ne définissent plus la quantité d'électricité ou le flux d'électricité.
La quantité d'électricité est maintenant considérée comme une utilisation archaïque, et a été lentement remplacée par les termes charge d'électricité, puis quantité de charge électrique, et aujourd'hui simplement «charge».
Le terme électricité étant de plus en plus corrompu par des contradictions et des définitions non scientifiques, les experts utilisent aujourd'hui le terme charge pour éliminer toute confusion possible.
