L' organisation politique et sociale des Zapotèques était étroitement liée à la religion, à l'économie et à l'organisation sociale. Les Zapotèques sont le plus grand groupe aborigène de l'État mexicain d'Oaxaca, qui existe depuis la période préhispanique.
Le terme « zapotèques » dérive du nahualt, la langue d'origine des Aztèques, qui a survécu jusqu'à ce jour grâce aux petits groupes aborigènes qui le parlent encore. En Náhualt, le terme est tsapotecatl, qui fait référence au fruit connu au Mexique sous le nom de zapote, qui donne leur nom à ces aborigènes.
Monte Alban
Avant la découverte de l'Amérique, cette communauté aborigène a réussi à établir un état développé. En fait, les ruines de Monte Albán, Mitla et Yagul révèlent l'existence d'une société zapotèque avancée avant l'arrivée des Espagnols.
Cependant, à partir du XVIe siècle, les Européens ont envahi les territoires zapotèques pour en extraire des richesses naturelles. Malgré cela, cette communauté n'a pas été aussi affectée que d'autres (les Mayas et les Aztèques, par exemple) dans lesquelles l'invasion espagnole avait un caractère plus militaire.
Ensuite, certaines caractéristiques de l'organisation politique et sociale de ce groupe autochtone sont présentées, faisant référence à des éléments à la fois préhispaniques et contemporains.
Organisation politique des Zapotèques
La politique des Zapotèques, comme celle des autres cultures mésoaméricaines, était basée sur le développement de guerres qui leur permettaient de gagner de nouveaux territoires. En outre, à travers ces guerres, ils ont capturé des ennemis qui seraient plus tard soumis à des sacrifices lors de cérémonies religieuses.
Entre les années 300 et 900, la politique des Zapotèques tournait autour de Monte Albán, la métropole où se trouvaient toutes les organisations étatiques.
Entre les années 900 et 1400, les Zapotèques se sont organisés en cités-États qui se faisaient concurrence, favorisant le progrès de la communauté.
Avec l'arrivée des Espagnols, les territoires zapotèques sont envahis; Malgré cela, ils ont réussi à maintenir relativement leur autonomie.
Actuellement, l'organisation politique des Zapotèques est basée sur le système de fret. Les postes sont des postes au sein du gouvernement (juges, fonctionnaires, maires) qui peuvent être occupés par tout citoyen compétent, homme ou femme (bien que les femmes soient rarement choisies pour ces postes).
Organisation sociale
Mariage
Les communautés zapotèques pratiquent la consanguinité, ce qui signifie que les membres d'un groupe familial épousent d'autres membres du même groupe familial, bien qu'il ne soit pas interdit de former une famille avec des membres d'autres familles.
Ils distinguent deux types de mariages: l'union libre, qui suit la common law des Zapotèques, et le mariage par l'Église catholique. Le divorce est interdit par l'Église, mais parfois les couples se séparent simplement et se joignent librement à d'autres personnes.
Patriarcat
Les communautés zapotèques sont organisées selon le système patriarcal, ce qui signifie que le centre de la communauté est l'homme. Très peu de tribus s'organisent de manière matriarcale.
La famille
Les Zapotèques préfèrent les familles élargies (composées de parents, enfants, grands-parents, oncles et cousins) aux familles nucléaires. Dans le cas où une famille est nucléaire (composée uniquement de parents et d'enfants), elle vit généralement à proximité du reste de la famille.
Patrimoine
La règle zapotèque est qu'en cas de décès des parents, l'héritage est réparti également entre tous les enfants.
Cependant, il arrive souvent que le plus jeune enfant en bénéficie davantage que les autres enfants, du fait qu'ils vivaient encore avec leurs parents au moment de leur décès.
En plus de cela, la progéniture masculine hérite généralement plus d'actifs que la progéniture féminine, car il s'agit d'une société patriarcale.
De son côté, la terre peut être héritée avant même le décès des parents: lorsque l'un des enfants se marie et que les parents sont si vieux qu'ils ne peuvent pas travailler la terre.
Division sociale
La société zapotèque est divisée en trois groupes: les gens du commun, les prêtres et la noblesse.
Chacune des communautés zapotèques a un chef ou chef de groupe qui est chargé de contrôler les affaires de sa tribu.
Religion
Les Zapotèques de la période préhispanique considéraient que l'univers était entouré de quatre éléments, chacun d'une couleur spécifique et avec certains attributs surnaturels.
De même, les Zapotèques associaient les dieux à des éléments naturels, tels que le soleil, la pluie et les marées, entre autres. De plus, au cours de cette période, le temps était considéré comme cyclique et non linéaire.
À l'heure actuelle, les Zapotèques suivent en partie la doctrine catholique, qui a été syncrétisée avec les croyances préhispaniques.
Les croyances actuelles des Zapotèques comprennent:
- La vénération de Jésus-Christ (à la fois l'enfant et l'adulte).
- La croyance aux animaux gardiens (appelés tons). Lors de la naissance, chaque personne acquiert un ton, qui peut être n'importe quelle créature; on considère que cette créature donne à l'individu une part de ses caractéristiques naturelles (force, vitesse, agilité, intelligence, entre autres).
- L'existence de sorcières et de sorcières et de démons avec des formes masculines et féminines.
En plus des prêtres catholiques, les sociétés zapotèques ont certains prêtres qui sont chargés de guider les rituels spirituels.
Ces prêtres sont appelés «sorciers» et sont chargés de diriger les cérémonies, telles que: mariages, funérailles, baptêmes, déménagement dans une nouvelle maison, nettoyages spirituels, entre autres.
Cérémonies
Les Zapotèques de la période préhispanique ont exécuté une série de rituels destinés à plaire aux dieux.
Ces cérémonies comprenaient des offrandes de sang et des sacrifices humains et animaux. Souvent, des guerriers capturés d'autres tribus étaient offerts en échange de la faveur des dieux pour obtenir de bonnes récoltes, pour mettre fin à la période de sécheresse, entre autres.
Les cérémonies zapotèques d'aujourd'hui sont davantage orientées vers des événements qui font partie du cycle de la vie, comme les baptêmes, les communions, les mariages et les funérailles.
Deux des cérémonies les plus importantes sont celle qui a lieu le jour de la Toussaint et celle qui a lieu le jour du saint patron de chaque communauté.
